The San Francisco Giants have signed P Todd Wellemeyer to a minor-league contract, where he can make $1M if he makes the team out of spring training. This is a pitcher last season that fell apart a little bit going 7-10, 5.89 ERA in 21 starts. He made 7 appearances in relief as well. In the 2008 season, Wellemeyer went 13-9, 3.71 ERA in 32 starts though. The Giants made a great move here, as they might as well take a chance, it's worth it.
Sure his walk-to-strikeout ratio was terrible last year, 57 walks to 78 strikeouts. But again, in 2008, he had 62 walks and 134 strikeouts. I know his innings were different, but he was successful in the 2008 season, injury free and got the innings. There is potential for Wellemeyer to be the 4th or 5th starter in San Fran, and will pitch for his 5th team since 2003. He is coming off an elbow injury, but is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season.
