Blue Jays sign pair of shortstops

The Blue Jays have most likely moved on from the Marco Scutaro era after re-signing fan favourite John McDonald to a 2-year / $3M deal & signing SS Alex Gonzalez to a 1-year / $2.75M contract.  Gonzalez, a 11-year veteran, has played for the Marlins, Red Sox and Reds in his career hitting .247 with 114 HR & 521 RBI.  His best season was in 2004 for the Marlins where he hit only .232 but had a career high in HR (23) & RBI (79).  Gonzalez may not win a gold glove any time soon, but he is a solid defensive player. The combination of Gonzalez & McDonald is a step in the right direction for next season.  The ex-Red Sox shortstop is a career .279 hitter at Rogers Centre with 13 RBI in 17 games.  McDonald, who is very happy to return to Toronto, played in only 73 games in 2009 with 151 at-bats.  His role will be determined as the season progresses depending on injuries etc.
